Fiji is composed of two main islands (Viti Levu and Vanua Levu) set in an archipelago of more than 330 beautiful islands in the South Pacific Ocean, only 110 of which are inhabited.
Viti Levu
The largest island of Fiji and has an area of 10,389 km², it is about 150km long by 100km wide. Its central highlands comprise a mountain chain formed through volcanic activity, covered in dense tropical rainforest. The highest point in Fiji is Mount Tomanivi (1,324 m) which is on Viti Levu.
Viti Levu is a home to the capital and largest city – Suva. Suva is the commercial and political centre of Fiji and the largest urban area in the South Pacific, with a population of about 85,000. It is Fiji's main port. Lautoka, the second largest city in Fiji, with a population of about 53,000 is famous for its sugar cane industry and is the second seaport of entry in Fiji, after Suva. Nadi (Nandi), is the third largest city, with a population of 45,000, at which the international airport is located, it is also the country’s main tourist center.
A costal road runs around the perimeter of the island, connecting all the significant population and tourism centers including Natadola Beach, Sigatoka, The Coral Cost, Pacific Harbor, Nausori and Raki Raki.
Denarau Island is about 10 km by road from Nadi. It is the largest integrated resort in the South Pacific. If you want to splash out and be pampered, this is where you want to be. It boasts eight large beachfront resorts, and an 18-hole championship golf course.
You’ll find an excellent range of high quality accommodation, with the resorts offering designer suites, stunning swimming pools and a wide range of restaurants. Whether you want to shop, have some adventure or experience some of the best dining Fiji has to offer, you’ll find it at Denarau Island.
The Port on Denarau Island is the gateway to the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands, offering connections to the island resorts, day cruises to tropical islands, fishing and diving charters and other watersports activities.
Vanua Levu
The second largest island of Fiji with an area of 5,587.1 km², it’s about 180km long, and 50km at its widest point. It is split by a rugged mountain chain rising to 1,111m at its highest point Nasorolevu.
The islands main population and administrative center is Labasa, (Population 29,000) is located on the north side of the island. It’s a sugar growing center with a strong Indian community.
Savusavu is an idyllic seaside town with a population of about 7,000 people. It is a popular center for tourists due to the stunning diving in the area, and a mecca for visiting yachts to the small marina located in the center of town.
Labasa the administrative center of the island has an economy built on the sugar industry. Whilst not a tourism center as such it is worth visiting as it represents an “untouched” Fiji town, where you are unlikely to bump into another countryman.
Taveuni
The third largest island in the Fiji group, known locally as the “Garden Island”. It is a focus for those looking for an eco-tourism experience due to the number of nature reserves, bushwalks and eco-tourism lodges.
The rich volcanic soils of the island were formed as a result of recent volcanism, whilst classified as “dormant” the last recorded eruption was only in about 1650. This produced a lava flow at the southern tip of the island. Eruptions since human occupation of the island are generally located in the southern half of the island. The island is dotted with scoria cones, craters and fissure zones.
Popular sites to visit include:
The Rainbow Reef and Vuna Reef are famous for diving and snorkeling, on the western side in the narrow Somosomo Strait between Taveuni and Vanua Levu,it is known as one of the world's premier soft coral dive areas. Other famous dive sites include Eel Reef and the Great White Wall.
Taveuni offers many land-based attractions, including hiking nature trails, visiting waterfalls, enjoying birdwatching or village trips.
One famous attraction is a crater lake located in the center of Taveuni - Lake Tagimaucia. Fiji's most famous waterfalls, the Bouma Falls are located in the Bouma National Heritage Park and Lavena area (Ravilevu) Nature Reserves. Bouma National Heritage Park offer hiking trails and world-class birdwatching, with over a 100 native species of birds.
Two Nature reserves - Ravilevu Nature Preserve on the east coast and the Taveuni Forest Preserve in the middle of the island – were created to protect Fiji's wildlife.
Kadavu
Kadavu island is the fourth largest island of Fiji and the largest island in the Kadavu Group, located 100 km to the south from the main island Viti Levu . The island is known for its rouged mountainous lands, original rainforest cover (75% of the islan), its waterfalls and bird diversity. The highest mountain on Kadavu is Nabukelevu, also known as Mount Washington (822 m).
Mt Washington is a dormant volcano of andesitic/dacitic nature. Block and ash flow deposits around the volcano incorporate human artifacts and suggests the volcano was last active during the past few hundred years.
The untouched nature and unspoiled local culture makes Kadavu ideal for a remote vacation. Kadavu does not have a developed for road network and most of travelling around is by foot. The main city in Kadavu is Vunisea with an air strip, hospital, post office and police station.
Yasawa islands
The Yasawa group of islands consists of six main islands and a number of smaller islets.. The archipelago is volcanic in origin and very mountainous. The higher islands of Kuata and Waya Lailai have, honeycomb rock formations and summits just short of 600 metres above sea level.
The northern islands are home to the famous Blue Lagoon. The beautiful and peaceful environment is perfect for relaxing or enjoying the many activities on offer. snorkelling, diving, local villages visits, hiking, cave exploration and - depending on the season - even swimming with manta rays.
The island chain is a major tourism center, which hosts resorts catering from backpackers style to the very exclusive. They are serviced by vessels out of Port Denarau.
